Those of you who follow me know that I am a Sesame Street fan, and that I'm disappointed in the show that it's become. I look at it as symbolic of business in general today. I imagine that the creators had a vision that centered on making a difference in the lives of others, and never imagined that it would become a worldwide phenomenon of the 70s and 80s. And while I think that the company still believes it's focused on education, I think it has fallen short of that, and is just another business. When we look around us it's all about the dollar. It's about profitability today. Profitability first, passion second.
It's not enough to strive for passion that makes itself sustainable, we have to fill the pockets of shareholders and directors. We have to pay bonuses and demonstrate just how important we are. If we were focused on people-first, we wouldn't be in the mess that surrounds us today. So what do we do about it. I can't say I have the answer, but I know that it's not enough for me to just sit and complain.
I can look back to the messages of old Sesame Street - take care of each other, TRY to be a good example to someone else, accept yourself for who you are, celebrate your strengths but don't be a show-off, accept criticism with humility, value other people (no matter how straaaange they look). And don't take yourself too seriously.

I haven't watched Sesame Street in a few years, so I don't know how it's changed. But unfortunately most businesses (and that's what it is) will change their message for the appropriate amount of money! Sad, but true.
I haven't watched Sesame Street since I was in school...but I have a feeling Walt Disney might have been disappointed in the junk Disney is putting out there under his name... Just a thought. And Sam Walton? I'm not sure he envisioned the big Wal-Mart takeover of America and underpaid, poorly treated employees...
First, LOVE the redesign! Nice job!
I haven't watched SS in a very long time. Sad to hear that it might have caved to commercialism. :(
A former colleague of mine recently wrote a great book on the history of Sesame Street. You should definitely check it out. It's called "Street Gang: The Complete History of Sesame Street" by Michael Davis. A great book by a wonderful guy.
Thanks for your muse! I'm really enjoying your installments!
:)
@Stephanie, exactly. I think it's possible to have success and still put people first. And I think their visions were based on that. I do think they would be disappointed today.
@Robin Thanks I appreciate that. What a great idea of yours!
I haven't seen it in at least 15 years but I have such fond memories of that show. I take it that it's sold out to commercialism now?
Never take yourself too seriously!
Loved Sesamme Sreet when I was growing up, but my kids today can't really appreciate it but they do know the characters....I still love Kermit..
Lovin' the new look! And I sooooooooo loved Madeleine Kahn. Young Frankenstein, and so many more funny flicks, huh? And of course this Sesame Street moment is priceless!
Thanks I loooved Madeleine Kahn too. She had so much personality in that little body. Lol.
I don't think that Sesame St has overtly sold out to commercialism, but I think the direction they're taking is geared more toward developing a brand that can be retailed (Tickle Me Elmo, etc) than on creating valuable innovative content. They've let that dull their edge. It's too bad, because now they've gone and limited themselves to a very small target audience, and lost the focus of just intelligent thoughtful academic and social education. I hope they can still bring it back on track.
Thanks for the compliments on the redesign too ladies!
